About 500 years ago, people began pressing flowers to preserve them for identification. During the Victorian period, creating personal herbaria of dried plants was a popular pastime. Scientists recently used pressed flowers from that era to derive climate data. With an estimated 2.5 billion plant and animal specimens stored in collections around the world, some dating back 250 years, scientists may be able to establish temperature information for additional areas where no records exist.
