The archaeologist sat on one side of a table, across from a woman perched on a stool. On the table was a golden necklace studded with jasper. Outside, the Egyptian winds howled, blowing sand into the tent. ‘How much?’ asked the woman. He nervously scribbled a number on a piece of paper and slid it towards her. ‘I’m taking a big risk here,’ he said. She put down a bundle of bills. He flipped through them and nodded. She scooped up the necklace and disappeared into the night.
