The Grand Canyon’s length measures roughly 445 kilometres. That knowledge, however, seemed irrelevant as he stood before the deep slash in front of him. The red and ochre shades of the canyon’s strata, as closely stacked as the pages of a book, stood out clearly against the blue of both the vast sky above and silver of the Colorado River below. He marvelled at what millions of years of running water had fashioned from stone. For a moment, he felt immeasurably small.
