Although he died in 2013 at age 95, Nelson Mandela is immortalised in the pantheon of great leaders. Mandela fought to rid South Africa of apartheid, and despite 27 years as a political prisoner, he emerged with no signs of bitterness and was elected the country’s first black president. While many feared civil war would engulf South Africa, Mandela’s compassion and resoluteness cast a surprising calm over his ‘rainbow nation’, and he came to be revered by black and white South Africans alike.
