Alex Osborn, a partner in an advertising agency, coined the term ‘brainstorm’ in the mid-1900s to describe a process in which a group works together to tackle a problem. Osborn’s number one rule for a successful brainstorming session was that there must be no criticism. However, recent studies show that debate and dissent can actually stimulate creative thinking. Critics also question brainstorming’s efficacy, saying results suffer from groupthink, with participants tending to focus on one idea.
